UMIACS faculty are actively developing new technologies as entrepreneurs in commercial ventures and at non-profit Institutions:
- Leafsnap
- Dr. David Jacobs is working with the Smithsonian Institution and Columbia University to develop Leafsnap, an electronic field guide that uses visual recognition software to identify plant species from photographs.
- Visisonics
- Dr. Ramani Duraiswami is the President and CEO of VisiSonics Corporation where he develops state of the art tools and solutions in 3D sound capture, analysis and reproduction.
- Komoku
- Dr. William Arbaugh founded Komoku, Inc. to develop a product to detect sophisticated Malware. Komoku was purchased by Microsoft in 2008 and its technology currently runs on over 500 million computers.
- XMTT, Inc.
- Dr. Uzi Vishkin founded XMTT, Inc to advance the use of Explicit Multi-Threading in building and using computers.
- Zumobi
- Dr. Ben Bederson is the co-founder and Chief Scientist at The Zumobi Network where he builds innovative interfaces for mobile applications.
